Kate Winthrop, the only child of a wealthy shipping magnate, has the course of her life charted for her by her parents. She’s expected to marry well and produce a successor to the Winthrop empire. But Kate has a very different path in mind. Her true passion lies with photography—and with women.

Alone in the city after losing her brother, Sicilian immigrant Giuliana Russo starts working for the Winthrops as a maid. Despite their different social status, Kate and Giuliana become friends, much to the dismay of Kate’s parents.

As the connection between the two women grows, a devastating earthquake hits San Francisco and ignites fires that sweep through the city for three days and nights.

Will the disaster shatter their tentative feelings for each other, or will they find the courage to save each other’s lives—and their hearts?

Join Kate and Giuliana on a journey of danger and discovery in the action-packed historical romance Shaken to the Core, set against the backdrop of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

4 Stars

I love Historical San Francisco, so of course I had to read Shaken to the Core! Plus, there are lesbians. Guilianna came to America from Sicily with her brother to earn money for their family back home. Unfortunately, her brother dies, leaving Guilianna all alone. Thankfully, Kate’s family is looking to hire a new maid, and Guilianna fits the bill. She just expects to clean their home before returning to hers, but soon she finds herself befriending Kate and maybe becoming more.

Shaken to the Core is more Historical than Romance, but I was okay with that. I feel like all of the details of this historic event were really well done. It’s a fascinating time in history and lends itself to a lot of different stories, particularly those that show how people from various backgrounds all came together to help each other survive this disaster. Kate and Guilianna are complete opposites in terms of their social situations, but that doesn’t stop them from taking care of each other and those in need, and then falling in love. Of course, I do wish there had been more kissing (and more), but their relationship developed very sweetly and we’re left with this sense of this is just the beginning of great things for them.

If you like 20th Century History, sweet romances, and ladies kissing, then I’d definitely recommend Shaken to the Core. In addition to the amazing setting and the romance, there’s also a lot of good stuff about how women are just as capable as men. Kate’s biggest dream is to be a newspaper photographer, and ironically it’s the fact that men think women can’t handle the job that allows her to get the pictures she needs to land the job!
